Acquapendente is one of the main towns of Alta Tuscia and a historic stop on the Via Francigena. Its position along the Via Cassia, close to the borders with Tuscany and Umbria, gave the town a role as a crossing point that still shapes its identity today. Its most important monument is the Basilica Concattedrale del Santo Sepolcro, tied to the tradition of pilgrimages toward Rome and the Holy Land.
The Basilica and its crypt
The building has medieval origins and was linked to the Benedictine order. Its most striking feature is the Romanesque crypt, organised around columns and covered by vaults: inside, it preserves a small shrine echoing the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, a central element of the town's devotion and history.
The Via Francigena
Acquapendente appears on the great European pilgrim route. Even today, the Francigena links the town to the Monte Rufeno Reserve, to Proceno and to the stages heading into Tuscany.
Art and nature in Alta Tuscia
The town can be paired with Torre Alfina, the Bosco del Sasseto and the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve, building a day that combines historic centre and landscape.
