Barbarano Romano occupies a tuff plateau bounded by deep ravines. Its naturally defensible position encouraged the growth of a compact village, still readable in the layout of its walls, gates and houses lined along the main streets. The town is also the natural starting point for exploring Marturanum Park and the San Giuliano necropolis.
Inside the village
Entering the old centre leads into a fabric of stone houses, arches and small squares. Its small scale means it can be visited without a rigid route, simply following the streets to the edge of the plateau: from several points, the drop toward the valleys below is immediately clear.
A town between the Middle Ages and the Etruscans
Barbarano's appeal comes from the contrast between the medieval village and the archaeological territory surrounding it. Monumental Etruscan tombs lie just a short distance away, set within the woods.
Gateway to Marturanum
The Marturanum Regional Nature Reserve protects over a thousand hectares of ravines, woods and pastures. A full day can combine the old town, a hike and archaeology.
