Bolsena sits on the north-eastern shore of the lake that bears its name, combining archaeology, the Middle Ages and lakeside scenery within a few kilometres. The old town climbs from the lower part of the village up to the Rione Castello, built on the tuff promontory. The town is closely tied to Santa Cristina and to the tradition of the 1263 eucharistic miracle, which has made Bolsena an important stop for religious tourism as well.
Rocca Monaldeschi
The Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara dominates the medieval quarter. Documented since the 12th century and altered over time, the fortified complex today houses the Territorial Museum of Lake Bolsena. From the castle area, views open onto the lake and the rooftops of the village.
Santa Cristina
The monumental Santa Cristina complex preserves traces of different eras, from catacombs to basilica. It's the town's main religious site and the centre of devotion to its patron saint: every 24 July, Bolsena celebrates Santa Cristina with the traditional re-enactment known as the Misteri.
From the village to the lake
One of Bolsena's strengths is how easily you move from its medieval lanes to the lakefront. Viale Colesanti has linked the old town to the shore along a long tree-lined avenue for over a century.
