Calcata sits on an isolated tuff outcrop above the Treja river valley. Declared unsafe in the 1930s, the village was resettled from the 1960s-70s by a community of artists and craftspeople, who preserved its tuff houses and turned them into studios and galleries.
A car-free village
The old town is reachable only on foot from the car park above, which has kept it free from mass motorised tourism. A perfect afternoon stroll.
