Capodimonte: the village on the Lake Bolsena promontory

Capodimonte occupies one of the most scenic points on Lake Bolsena: a promontory stretching into the water with views over both islands. The village is dominated by the Rocca Farnese and ringed by a lakefront promenade with gardens and volcanic-sand beaches. The area has been inhabited since prehistory and includes the important Bisenzio site, but the village's current character is shaped mainly by the Middle Ages and the Farnese family.

The Rocca Farnese

The fortress began as a military structure before being transformed under Farnese rule. Its position, at the highest point of the promontory, defines Capodimonte's profile as seen from the lake. The gardens and visitable areas follow specific opening arrangements.

The Museum of Inland Waters Navigation

The Museo della Navigazione nelle Acque Interne tells the story of the relationship between local communities and their lake and river environments. Among its most important pieces is a dugout canoe found in the area.

The lakefront

A long volcanic-sand beach and gardens along the shore round off the visit. Boat connections and initiatives linked to Isola Bisentina also depart from Capodimonte.

The town centre is free to visit. Check with the municipality for Rocca Farnese and Museo della Navigazione opening times, and options for visiting Isola Bisentina.
