The Civitonico Carnival is one of the great popular events of Civita Castellana. In the weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday, the town centre is filled with parades of allegorical floats, costumed groups and free-roaming masks. The festival involves associations, schools and community groups, and in recent years has continued to draw thousands of visitors.
The allegorical floats
Building the floats takes months of preparation and involves organised groups from across the area. The parades are the most spectacular moment, moving through the main streets with music and choreography.
The children's Carnival
Alongside the main parades, a space dedicated to younger children is traditionally organised, with its own activities and events.
Shrove Tuesday
Carnival closes with a great street party on Shrove Tuesday. This is when the event's collective spirit comes through most clearly.
