The Monte Gelato Waterfalls: a walk among water, woods and an old mill

The Monte Gelato Waterfalls lie within the Valle del Treja Regional Park, in the territory of Mazzano Romano. The river flows between rocks and vegetation, forming a series of small waterfalls that have made this one of the park's most visited spots. The area isn't interesting for the falls alone: traces of different eras cluster around the river, including a Roman villa, medieval structures, a tower and, above all, the old mill that once harnessed the water's power.

The mill on the Treja

The Mola di Monte Gelato was built in the 19th century and remained in operation into the 20th. Today it's one of the landscape's most recognisable features, alongside the river's small waterfalls. The walk around the complex is short and suits those not looking for a long hike, though more demanding trails toward other parts of the park also start from here.

From Monte Gelato toward Calcata

To turn the visit into a proper hike, follow the Valle del Treja trail network: the route to Calcata covers about 7 kilometres of valley and takes several hours. This turns Monte Gelato into a starting point for discovering the park, rather than just a stop at the falls.

A well-visited spot

Easy access makes Monte Gelato especially popular on weekends and during the warmer months. To enjoy it more fully, it's best to arrive during quieter hours.

Swimming is not allowed at the Monte Gelato Waterfalls, and picnicking is not permitted in the immediate area around the falls; the park provides a dedicated picnic area near the car park, in the Castellaccio woods.
