The Procession of the Risen Christ is one of the most heartfelt religious events in Tarquinia. On Easter Sunday, the statue of Christ is carried through the old town in a celebration involving confraternities, associations and strong public participation. The event is deeply tied to local identity and marks one of the moments when Tarquinia's medieval fabric becomes an integral part of the tradition itself.
The procession
The procession moves through the streets of the centre, accompanying the image of the Risen Christ. The presence of confraternities, banners and worshippers creates a scene very different from an ordinary tourist visit to the town.
Easter in Tarquinia
The procession closes out the cycle of Holy Week celebrations and also draws back many Tarquinia natives who now live elsewhere.
A town of faith and archaeology
The day can be rounded off with the old town, the National Archaeological Museum and the Monterozzi necropolis — while keeping the cultural visit clearly separate from the religious occasion.
