From the second half of June through early July, the fields around Tuscania turn colour as the lavender blooms. The festival dedicated to this plant grows directly out of the relationship between the old town and an agricultural landscape that, in recent years, has become one of the area's most recognisable images. The event offers activities in the village and opportunities to learn about lavender products, essences and processing.
The fields in bloom
The blooming fields are the real draw. The hills around Tuscania fill with rows of purple that create a striking contrast with the tuff stone, the medieval basilicas and the countryside. These are working agricultural fields, though: visit only where permitted, respecting private property and crops.
The festival in the village
During the event, the old town hosts markets, cultural activities and events centred on lavender and natural products.
Tuscania beyond archaeology
The festival gives a different reason to return to a town best known for San Pietro, Santa Maria Maggiore and its Etruscan necropolises.
