The Montefiascone Wine Fair: Est! Est!! Est!!! and traditions on Lake Bolsena

The Wine Fair of Montefiascone is one of Tuscia's longest-running summer events. This town overlooking Lake Bolsena devotes several days to local wine, and in particular to Est! Est!! Est!!!, a name that has been tied to the town's history and image for centuries. The event combines tastings, music, folklore and activities across the old town.

The legend of Est! Est!! Est!!!

The wine's name comes from the famous legend of the German bishop Johannes Defuk and his servant Martino, sent ahead to mark inns with the best wine by writing "Est" on the door. In Montefiascone, the wine was apparently so good it earned three "Est"s and a string of exclamation marks.

The fair in the old town

During the event, the streets and squares host tastings and shows. The Rocca dei Papi is also often part of activities tied to wine and the view over the lake.

Wine and territory

The fair is a good starting point for exploring the wine landscape around Lake Bolsena too, without separating the product from the town that made it famous.

The Wine Fair takes place in August; dates and programme change each year. The Municipality of Montefiascone publishes the summer calendar and official information on individual events.
