Lago di Mezzano is one of the most peaceful places in Alta Tuscia. Much smaller than nearby Lake Bolsena, it occupies a volcanic basin ringed by hills, woods and farmland. Its compact shape and the absence of any large towns along its shores give it a character quite unlike the province's other lakes: it's a destination chosen above all for its scenery, and for a slow stop in the countryside between Valentano and Latera.
A lake of volcanic origin
Mezzano belongs to the broader volcanic landscape of the Volsini area. The lake occupies a near-circular depression and reaches considerable depths relative to its size. The surrounding land keeps a rural character, with few buildings and wide stretches of vegetation: this isn't a lake set up as a bathing resort, and its appeal lies precisely in its natural, secluded scale.
Traces of the Bronze Age
Lago di Mezzano also matters archaeologically. Underwater surveys have identified traces of prehistoric settlements along ancient shorelines, now submerged due to changes in water level — a detail invisible on a simple walk, but one that adds depth to the story of a place people have used since prehistory.
Pair it with Valentano and Latera
The lake can become one stop on an Alta Tuscia itinerary alongside Valentano, Latera, Gradoli or the Selva del Lamone. It particularly suits those seeking lesser-known places away from the main tourist flows.
