Lubriano sits on the opposite edge of the Valle dei Calanchi from Civita di Bagnoregio. Its position offers a different, wider view of the landscape, with the village of Civita suspended above the eroded clay. The old centre is small, but its relationship with the valley is the real reason to stop here.
The balcony over Civita
From Lubriano's viewpoints, the structure of the badlands, the ridges and the walls surrounding Civita read clearly. The view is especially striking during the hours when low light picks out the erosion in the terrain.
The village
Lanes and squares here keep the character of a small Alta Tuscia town. The visit can be brief, rounded off with a walk in the surroundings or on the valley's nature trails.
The Valle dei Calanchi
Lubriano is a good place to understand that Civita isn't an isolated monument, but part of a fragile, constantly changing geological system.
