The Macchina di Santa Rosa procession: Unesco heritage every 3 September

Every 3 September, Viterbo commemorates the first transport of Santa Rosa's relics with an event recognised by Unesco as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How the procession works

The "Macchina" is a tower roughly 30 metres tall and about 5 tonnes in weight, redesigned artistically each year. It is carried on the shoulders of around 100 bearers through the historic centre, on a route that requires months of coordinated training.

The event draws large crowds: to watch up close, arrive well in advance.
