Every 23 and 24 July, Bolsena honours Santa Cristina with one of Tuscia's most evocative religious traditions. During the procession, the Misteri come to life in the town's main squares: living tableaux depicting episodes from the young saint's martyrdom. The festival blends liturgy, folk theatre and collective participation; the performers stay perfectly still within scenes set up along the route, turning the old town into a sequence of sacred images for a few hours.
The living tableaux
The Misteri are staged on the evening of 23 July and again on the morning of the 24th. The scenes recall the trials and martyrdom attributed to Santa Cristina's life: the static nature of the tableaux makes for an effect very different from ordinary theatre, since the procession encounters each scene one after another as it moves through Bolsena.
Santa Cristina and the town
The Basilica of Santa Cristina preserves the memory of the martyr and is also tied to the tradition of the 1263 Eucharistic Miracle. The festival is therefore rooted in a place with a strong religious continuity.
Bolsena during the Misteri
This is one of the best times to understand the town's identity beyond the lake and summer tourism. The squares become an integral part of the ritual, and the participation of residents is one of its most visible aspects.
