The Ottava Medievale of Orte is one of Tuscia's most elaborate historical re-enactments. For about two weeks, the old town comes alive with its seven contrade (districts), which open taverns, stage shows and compete in events tied to the feast of Sant'Egidio. The event isn't built around a single procession: it spreads throughout the town, turning streets, palaces and squares into a grand medieval stage.
The seven districts
The contrade are at the heart of the event. Each runs its own tavern and joins in the festivities with performers, costumes and activities: rivalry also plays out through food, as each tavern serves dishes inspired by local cuisine and historical reconstruction.
The Archers' Palio
The competitive side culminates in the Palio, where archers from each district compete for victory. Processions and ceremonies accompany the contest, giving the event a structure that repeats every year.
Orte as a stage set
The old town, built on its tuff plateau, is an essential part of the experience. The Ottava is also a good time to visit Orte Sotterranea (Underground Orte) and the town's other monuments.
