Selva del Lamone: trails through Tuscia's wildest forest

The Selva del Lamone Regional Nature Reserve spreads around Farnese, in the far northwest of Tuscia. It's a dense, irregular forest grown over volcanic terrain, where lava flows, rocks and vegetation create a landscape very different from the more orderly woods of the Monti Cimini. Entering the reserve feels like stepping into a secluded world: human presence goes back centuries, but it's often hidden by the vegetation.

A network of forest trails

The reserve offers numerous hiking routes of varying length and difficulty. Among the marked trails are the Sentiero Voltamacine and the Sentiero degli Alberi Monumentali (Monumental Trees Trail), alongside longer routes and paths also usable by mountain bike. The lava-rock terrain is worth taking seriously: in several spots the ground is uneven and demands attention, especially when wet.

Trees, rocks and ancient traces

The appeal of Selva del Lamone lies in the walk itself: large oaks, denser thickets, piles of volcanic rock and clearings alternate continuously, alongside archaeological traces and historic routes. It suits anyone looking for a less crowded, more "exploratory" nature outing than Tuscia's classic walks.

Pair it with Farnese

The village of Farnese sits right at the edge of the reserve and is the most convenient base for a visit. A day trip can combine the old town with the forest, setting aside at least a couple of hours for the Selva itself.

The trail network is extensive: choose your route before entering the reserve and bring a trail map. Hiking shoes and water are recommended; avoid improvising off-trail detours.
