Vignanello: Castello Ruspoli and its Renaissance garden

Vignanello lies east of the Monti Cimini, and its old centre revolves around Piazza della Repubblica. Here, Castello Ruspoli, the church of Santa Maria della Presentazione and the Casini Ruspoli face one another, forming one of Tuscia's most orderly urban ensembles. The castle, in its current form, largely dates to the 16th century and retains the look of a fortified residence.

Castello Ruspoli

The building has a quadrangular plan, four bastions and Ghibelline battlements, and is surrounded by a moat. Its 16th-century transformation is traditionally linked to the circle of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. The interiors and garden can be visited under conditions set by the owners.

The Italian garden

The garden was commissioned in 1611 by Ottavia Orsini. Twelve geometric hedge parterres organise the space around a peperino-stone fish pond: the survival of its historic layout makes it one of the most important formal gardens in the area.

Piazza della Repubblica

Facing the castle stand the collegiate church and the Casini Ruspoli, begun in the 18th century. The square makes it possible to read several phases of the family's history together, side by side.

The castle and garden can be visited by booking, according to the official calendar. Check the Castello Ruspoli website before setting off.
