Farnese lies in the far northwest of Tuscia, close to the Tuscan border and the Selva del Lamone. The town's name is inseparable from the Farnese family, who from this territory launched a story that would reach the papacy and the great courts of Europe. Its old centre keeps a compact medieval layout, with covered passageways, stone houses and palaces built up over the following centuries.
The Farnese village
Walking through the centre, you find traces of the family's long presence and the changes that came with the town's growth. Yet the architecture stays on a small-town scale, without the monumentality of Caprarola.
Lanes and views
The streets cross an irregular urban fabric and open onto the landscape of Alta Tuscia. The town keeps a secluded atmosphere, especially noticeable outside festival periods.
The Selva del Lamone
Just a short distance away begins the Selva del Lamone Nature Reserve, one of the wildest forested areas in Lazio. The village and the reserve combine easily in the same itinerary.
