Proceno is one of the last villages in Lazio before the border with Tuscany. Perched on a ridge in Alta Tuscia, its position along ancient communication routes gave the village a strategic role in controlling the territory. The old centre gathers around the Castello di Proceno, the architectural presence that dominates the village's profile.
The castle
The fortification preserves towers and structures developed over the centuries. Local tradition also links the castle to Galileo Galilei, who stayed in Proceno during a 17th-century journey. Today the complex is a privately owned historic residence, and access depends on arrangements set by its owners.
A village on the Francigena
Proceno is crossed by the Via Francigena and keeps the character of a small waypoint town. Its streets open out toward the countryside of Alta Tuscia and the Paglia valley.
Between Acquapendente and Tuscany
The visit combines naturally with Acquapendente, just a few kilometres away, or with a route toward Radicofani and the Val d'Orcia.
