A thermal weekend in Tuscia: springs, villages and landscapes around Viterbo

A thermal weekend in Tuscia makes it easy to alternate between relaxing in hot water and visiting villages, palaces and landscapes. Viterbo is the most natural base: the historic centre sits close to the great thermal basin, putting Terme dei Papi, Bullicame and Piscine Carletti all within easy reach. Those willing to travel further can instead build a stay around Terme di Vulci or Terme di Orte.

Day one: Viterbo and the thermal waters

The simplest plan is to spend the morning in the medieval San Pellegrino quarter and around the Palazzo dei Papi, then the afternoon at Terme dei Papi. Those wanting a more essential experience can get to know the thermal landscape through Bullicame and Piscine Carletti — not equivalent options: the facility offers organised services, while the free areas require more self-sufficiency.

Day two: choose your route

To continue the wellness theme, stay in the Viterbo area or head to Terme di Vulci, pairing the pools with the archaeological park and the Fiora valley. A closer alternative to Rome is Orte: a few hours at the thermal park plus a visit to the old town are enough for a second day without long drives.

Thermal Tuscia at an unhurried pace

For a longer stay, Viterbo also puts Villa Lante in Bagnaia, Lake Vico, Caprarola and several villages of the Monti Cimini within easy reach.

Book paid facilities in advance where required and always check conditions at public thermal areas. For private facilities, check hours, prices and rules on their official websites.
