Graffignano lies in the Teverina, north-east of Viterbo, amid hills and badlands close to the Umbrian border. The old centre is small, built around Castello Baglioni, a large fortified building that dominates the village. Its position along ancient routes between Lazio and Umbria made the town a control point in the territory as far back as the Middle Ages.
Castello Baglioni
The castle preserves towers, walls and rooms developed in different phases. Its name recalls the Baglioni family, who played an important role in the complex's history. The castle's bulk still defines the image of the old centre today.
The village
Houses, lanes and small squares cluster around the fortress. The visit doesn't take long, and it's precisely this small scale that makes it a good fit for an itinerary linking several villages of the Teverina.
Sipicciano and the valley
The municipal territory also includes Sipicciano and lies close to Celleno, Roccalvecce and Sant'Angelo. This makes it easy to build a route linking very different villages clustered within just a few kilometres.
